Getting up early could change your life. But what do you do if you are not naturally a morning person but you want to be. Well you have to become a morning person! Hmmm all well and good, but how the hell do you get motivated to actually give it a try and get out of bed earlier to make the most of your day?
Become a morning person!
You know I like to be practical and get stuff done, so here are my 5 top tips that may help you become a morning person.
1. Have a purpose!
It is REALLY difficult to get out of bed in the morning if you simply have no reason to do it! If you have a plan and a reason to get up, you are far more likely to bounce out of bed and be keen to get started on your day. Think of those times when you’ve gladly dragged your butt out of bed and into the shower in order to catch that early flight to go on your long awaited holiday. It’s the same thing, find a purpose and it’s sooooo much easier. Getting up to exercise first thing to be ahead on your day, walk the dog, read a great book and have a coffee in peace or even to meditate, whatever it is use it to get up.
2. Go to bed just a little earlier.
Even just 30 minutes earlier can make a massive difference to the quality of your sleep. You will find your extra morning time is generally far more rewarding than that extra 30 minutes just watching the TV before bed.
3. Don’t think about it, just do it.
With so much in life, often the thought of doing something is far worse than actually doing it. So, when the alarm goes off, don’t hit the snooze button, get up and out of bed straight away. Job done! Over thinking it all and trying to stay in bed for just another 9 minutes til the next snooze alarm goes off is just not going to get you up.
4. Have everything ready the night before.
When I plan to get up and exercise first thing, I make sure that the clothes and trainers I need to wear are in the bathroom waiting for me, I get up, go to the loo, brush my teeth and straight into my gym stuff. Then all I have to do is exercise. If you want to get up and work, have a clear desk ready the night before. If you want to get up and meditate, have your area ready. You get the idea. It really helps. In addition by planning the night before your brain is becoming conditioned with being ready to get up with purpose too! Bonus.
5. Tell yourself you are a morning person.
The mind is powerful and our feelings and behaviour are governed by our thoughts. If you tell yourself you are a morning person and that you love to get up early…it will happen! A little mindset training can be effective very quickly. Try repeating an affirmation in the evening like:
“I wake up easily and quickly when my alarm goes off”
or “I love to wake up early and make the most of my day”
Soon enough, you’ll believe the affirmation and it will become a truth.
